Alpine Library As early as 1892 the Alpine Center School housed a collection of library books. In 1898 the collection was moved to the second floor of the Town Hall - presently known as the Women's Club. More accurately described as an attic, the library books shared space with Ladies Aid and the Women's Club pots and pans. The first set of books in the Library was Bancroft's History of the United States.
In 1914 the San Diego County Free Library established Branch #16 in Alpine, sharing space with ALFA's collection. During the 1930s the library was moved to the first floor west wing of the same building with its own entrance and more space. The Library was at this location for over 40 years. Then, in 1978 the Library moved to its current site, The Kapsala Building, a leased storefront of approximately 3000 square feet.
Alpine Library Friends Association's campaign for a new Alpine Library was begun in 2002. Though state matching funds from Props14 and 81 have been exhausted, proceeds from the ALFA Bookstore and community donations continue to increase the Capital Building Fund. The new library will be built just west of the Alpine Community Center on Alpine Boulevard. |
